Female Redhead (Aythya americana) at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Penobscot Co., Maine
Observation details
Female in pond inside gate at south side near State Street entrance. A drab brownish and grayish-brown duck with steep forehead and rounded crown, heavy Aythya-like bill. Crown and side of head to crease behind eye dark brown, contrasting with pale brown cheek and face, which was paler yet anteriorly at base of bill. Narrow dull whitish eyering and thin pale crease extending behind and curving behind eye. Back and scapulars brownish-gray with some paler gray feathers and very faint and fine vermiculation. Tail gray and held out above water; undertail pale whitish gray. The breast was brownish and did not contrast sharply with flanks. Bill slate gray with broad black tip. There might have been a bare hint of pale gray line subtending that black tip. Eyes dark brown. Legs and feet dark gray. This bird dived in this shallow pond, but each dive was relatively brief. This bird was found by Jerry Smith and apparently present since last Friday, 20 October.
