Observation details
*noteworthy and very frustrating. MJI heard an unfamiliar plover call and called the group's attention to it, and we then heard it give the same, mostly unvarying call 15x or so as it flew up from Hatches, overhead, and out to sea. MJI started going for his phone to audio record it around the tenth call and maybe got the very last call just barely on the recording. The flight call was consistent and unvarying 'poo-ee', not as long (=shorter duration) as BBPL and not mellow like CRPL. Not as high-pitched and squealy as American or Pacific Golden-Plover. In listening to recordings of flight calls immediately after the experience it was somewhat like Spotted Redshank call, but Liam apparently saw it and thought it was a plover. MJI picked up the bird heading directly away far out and flight style was consistent with a Pluvialis (strong and direct) and not a Tringa (usually hesitant with somewhat loping wingbeats). We then realized that certain European Golden-Plover cuts were a perfect match for it, such as the first cut in this one: http://www.xeno-canto.org/344107. Intriguingly Blair thought of the call as one-noted while MJI thought of it as two-noted, which does appear to be a possible interpretation of many European Golden-Plover calls since the intensity seems to vary within the call. The uncut audio recording is attached here just in case it can reveal a call from the bird. Black-bellied Plovers are calling on the recording, and obviously we are talking as the bird flies away overhead. I believe the bird in question calls at the 17.0 sec mark, just after we talk and just before a Black-bellied calls. It is possible that this call is a distant Black-bellied as well. Attempts to clean it up and boost the signal have not been successful so far, but if possible perhaps this record could be salvaged.
