Observation details
I first detected and identified this bird after hearing its distinctive, nasal, raucous "raaaka raaaka raaaka" calls. When I found it, it was in one of the oak trees in the middle of the park, but later flew to several different areas of the park. Medium-sized woodpecker with a black back, wings and tail; white rump; a "clown face" with black face, white throat and forehead; bold white eyering; red cap; black chest; and white belly. In flight, it showed bold white wing patches. It was very skittish and would go quiet and then fly a considerable distance away if people or dogs got too close.
