Observation details
A pair and a precocial young no more than a few days old (very small and dark). I first saw the chick before I saw the parents, and later saw the chick again, crossing the road. The female saw me right about when I saw the chick; the male did not see me until a few moments later. I stayed at the spot for a while, hoping they would come back, and they did. When I sat down, the male came walking back, all the while giving soft vocalizations. I tried to photograph him and he ran away, but after a few minutes came back to the exact same spot. By this time, I had switched on my voice recorder and placed it on a rock on the ground; the male walked to almost a meter distance from the voice recorder while vocalizing. The recording probably would have been better had there been less wind and had I held the recorder just a little higher. Here's a recording of the male as he came walking back to where he had been before. Sounds muffled because of the low vegetation:
