Observation details
Possibly an Alder Flycatcher. "*Rarely detected in fall. I initially heard this bird giving its 'pip' calls, and that drew my attention to it. In the field, I assumed it was an Alder, but since I couldn't confirm its identity I left it as 'empidanox sp.' Today (10/19/17), I analyzed a recording I took while I was hearding it, and surprisingly the calls are there. The calls are a upside down v-shaped call. Once I had this call shape, I compared it to Willow, Least, and Alder Flycatcher calls from August-September in North and Central America. It seems to match the calls of Alder Flycatchers well (which show the v-shape) while it doesn't match Willow and Least (they show a vertical line shape). It also matches the spectrogram of an Alder Flycatcher I recorded in May 2017. This recording and spectrogram of this bird can be found at: ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S36946507"
