Observation details
Adult found earlier in the day by Kelly Beach, and communicated to me via text from Ryan Merrill. Rather easily noted distantly with scope views starting about noon and then off and on for the next hour. All dark underwing and visibly plain gray upper wing with faint narrow white trailing edge allowed for immediate detection amongst patterned upper wing of nearby Bonaparte's Gulls. Smaller size and seemingly more moth like flight and shorter round-tipped wings were noticeable but less evident than the wing features noted above. Lost track of it for about an hour as it could have headed further west into bay and out of my viewing. Around 2:00 I noted it much closer to the beach. It flew in close enough for some nice photo chances while it foraged within 50 feet from the shoreline. This is my 3rd personal record for Kitsap but it has been a few years since my last sighting.
