Female Lawrence's Goldfinch photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 8 October 2017 at Nipton, San Bernardino County, California.
Observation details
I spotted this bird quietly foraging on grass seeds along the western edge of the pond, where it remained for the duration of our brief visit despite moving around a little. I never heard it call. This was a small, plump bird with a short, conical bill, but I did not notice the details of wing and tail length. The plumage was a medium-gray with brown tones and no strong contrast among the head or back. The underparts were paler but again rather dull and seemingly unstreaked. The most conspicuous think about this bird was the lemon-yellow panel across the greater coverts and similarly colored edges to the remiges that created a striped pattern to the rear part of the wing. I also noted that the bill was extensively paler basally and that the eyes were dark, but I did not carefully study the rest of the bird while taking a few photos.
