NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #Z-4. Bulk reel #496 Song type 1 = SO-SOO-la; 2 = SO-SO-LA; 3 = SO-LAA. a) 26 May 1974. 1630 hours. Type 3 bird; very probably the same one as in Cut Z-3. Quality: 2, 1-2. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. 203 tape. LN. b) 1 June 1974. 1815 hours. Same male and apparently two females, one with type 2 (~7") phrase . One phrase of each saved here for the record. Quality: 3. Level: +3. When I became aware of the other two songs (through phones) I thought they were of birds "far away." As I wanted to obtain better recordings of Type 1 phrase I set out to try to find that bird and was surprised to find (by triangulation) that these songs were coming from somewhere fairly near to the loud type 3 bird. Therefore, I think the songs may have been by females singing quietly. That they could have been of the same male is possible but seems improbable--the quality seems different from what I'd expect if they were coming from the same source. By the time I got back to recording equipment (~6:50 PM) the birds had stopped singing. c) 2 June 1974. 1640 hours. Same male. (Other two not heard today.) Quality: 2-. Level: +3. I was at weest end of woods from 2:30-3:45 PM and heard no Soisola song but when I was walking to east end, it began (~3:55 PM). I returned to west end ~4:30 and male was still singing. I recorded a bit and then tried vainly (again!) to collect the bird until ~ 6:30. Perhaps for this reason no "probable female" song was heard today.
