NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #Z-3. Bulk reel #496 Song type 1 = SO-SOO-la; 2 = SO-SO-LA; 3 = SO-LAA. Location: "Dry woods" hacienda bordering that of Eli Ramon Martinez R., near San Jose, Dto. Perija. Weather: Cloudy, fair. a)20 July 1973. 7:10 PM. A type 3 (at times almost 2 or 2-3) bird. (Nearly dark!) Quality: 2-. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. b) 21 July 1973. 9:30 AM. No doubt same bird, next AM, although did not sing naturally (no bird sang naturally and this is the only bird that sant at all) but had to be started by my wandering through woods whistling. Quality: 1-2. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. Quality: 1-2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. c) PM. No doubt same bird (second figure very short, and almost a 2 but total effect is more of 3). Quality: 2. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. d) Same bird but in background is a type 1. Quality: 2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. Whether the type 1 phrase heard in "background" is of a different bird or a quiet phrase of this type 3 bird was not definitely established. When approaching this woods late PM of 20 July (~6:45 PM) I stopped along road and listened, heard a type 1 bird but its position could not be fixed. However, the distance (>300 m) would have precluded my hearing a low intensity phrase at that time. Note: I tried several times to decoy the type 3 bird for collectilng but it always remained at a distance. Response to playback: Normal song. Habitat: Forest.
