NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #Z-1. Bulk reel #496 Song type 1 = SO-SOO-la; 2 = SO-SO-LA; 3 = SO-LAA. 203 tape. a) 10 July 1973. 6P:30 PM to 6:45 PM. Elevation: 20-40 m. Weather: Cloudy, fair. Type 2 bird with phrases that are +/- normal. There are also heard some very low volume phrases. This may be quiet singing by the main bird, as I've found on other occasions with birds excited by playback and/or whistled imitation (which was used in this case), or at least some may be by one or more females* accompanying this main bird, which I believe to be a male. Note that these quiet phrases are somewhat "amorphous" but some have a +/- definite type 1 pattern. Quality: 2+. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. LN. Quality: 2+ (1-2). Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN. Note: The very first phrase at 3.75 was recorded on the SN before I began recording with the N-IV and really should be placed first in this cut, but for operating convenience it is spliced in after voice announcement change to 3.75 speed. *From overlap of some "clucking" sounds there is no doubt that more than one bird present and there are possibly three: one male and two females. b) 19 July 1973. 6:15 AM. No doubt same type 2 bird. Bird was singing when arrived on site at 6:00 AM and these final songs may be a continuation of its night-time singing; it was still fairly dark. (Momotus momota also heard.) Quality: 2-3. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN. c) 6:25 AM. Bird now obviously awake and again it is clear there is more than one bird present. Some of the quiet phrases are well patterned type 1. (Main song is type 2.)-->several good (although with noise) but one loud and direct @ ~ 4:05. Various clucking sounds heard of birds "talking" together. Quality: 2 (traffic noise). Level: +3, 0. 3.75 ips. LN. Collected. Together with Adolfo Gonzalez I circled around behind these birds and in response to my whistles a bird decoyed to us without calling; it came from the side and Adolfo spotted it, attracted by its footsteps, calling it to my attention. Collected = male #8870. Response to playback: Approach. Other Behaviors: Whisper.
