NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 2. Bulk reel: 449 Weather: Fair. Some natural calls as bird was foraging. Quality: 1-2. Level: +5. Then after playback. *This bird and its mate were collected [male #4856, female #4855] and I have identified them tentatively as M. ferox. There is some possibility they could be swainsoni, or even something else. There is something very confusing here; the sounds are much like tuberculifer too. Note: I called this to the attention of Bud Lanyon in 1968. He has worked out the matter and found that these vocalizations correspond to the form venezuelensis and that it is a species distinct from M. ferox. May 1969. PAS.
