Observation details
Perched on short sagebrush in sagebrush-grassland near trail. Small sparrow with large head, large bill, short tail, and stocky looking body. The structure immediately cued me in that this was an Ammodramus sp, eliminating all other sparrow possibilities. Grasshopper occurs in Idaho during the breeding season, whereas no other Ammodramus is likely to be here breeding or migrating. Dark yellow on the lores with pale gray eyebrow, complete eye ring, white median stripe on crown, unmarked breast, very rich dark rufous and gray wide streaks on scapulars and upper back, finely pale rufous streaks on gray nape, some rufous color on primaries. All of these features support Grasshopper Sparrow identification. Very poor photo taken with cellphone and cropped. No camera with me at the time due to weather conditions.
