Common Shelduck. Photo taken by Richard Pries
Observation details
Appears to be young Common Shelduck that was observed feeding in shallow pond. The bird was not approachable as it flew toward another section of the pond with fast and sleek flight. When observed feeding, the bird supports all identifiable characteristics of a Common Shelduck. I had learned that there were two Common Shelducks reported in New England this fall already (1 in New York and another in New Hampshire) and there were some in the eastern Canadian provinces last winter. Photo was taken by Richard Pries. The bird was not relocated after subsequent visits by several birders including Richard and myself.
