Observation details
Surprised to see this species on Lake Ontario this early in the Fall! 200-300 metres out, mostly swimming but sometimes diving. Eyes generally appeared darkish brown but on some angles sometimes appeared yellowish or at times even almost golden. Roundish head with fairly short beak, large white patch completely surrounding eye, somewhat triangular in appearance from some angles, dark crown and nape contrasting with grey-brown back, greyish to white flanks, some white just ahead of tail. Never seen in flight, always on water. Distant photos were obtained, best highly cropped have been uploaded. White "facial triangle" and extensive black on cap and around the "white triangle" more like that of a male. Apparent lack of long tail might be due to stage of moult at this time of year.
