NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 7. Bulk reel: 411a) 9/III/73. 8:30 AM. Weather: Clear. Natural song. Quality: "1". Level: 0. 203 tape. 3 3/4". LN.b) 16/III/73. 6:30 AM. 990 m. Cloudy. Natural song, one phrase. Although ~ same place this sounds like a different bird from part a); it's at a slightly higher pitch. Quality: 1. Level: -3. 3 3/4". LN. 203 tape.c) This is a few minutes after playback. Bird begins to sing quietly; it is probably the same bird as in b). This continues at 7.5 (with nice Henicorhina leucophrys in background). Quality: 1. Level: +2. 3 3/4" & 7.5". LN.Note: October 1969, for the first time I heard (and saw end of) a flight song by this species. It apparently did not fly around in circles but rather angled upward to quite high in clear area above canopy (steep hillside) and after calling stopped and went straight back again. The call was of a series of couplets, in rhythm and tempo ~ like the ascending song of Attila spadiceus, although at the very end it was more like one of its own "bother" or conflict vocalizations. (This was noted from roof of building at Rancho Grande.)4/III/73 - About noon noted a flight song close to the site of the one noted on other side (in the interim years have also heard others). Main difference was that it began with a "three-note" call while the others following were complete.9/III/73 - Saw a flight song display down by km ~ 25.5 (old = km 23 new) at ~ 7:30 AM. This was comprised entirely of 3-note calls. I saw this one fully and with each phrase it flapped wings, the successive phrases becoming louder (and thus higher in pitch), except the last which was less loud and was given as the bird had nearly completed the turn and was starting back down. (6-7 phrases total.) [Recordist made drawing here.].
