Media notes
NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 13. Bulk reel: 403. Cloudy, fair. Male type song. Note: A male-type song was heard naturally near this spot (up the ravine a fair distance). I tried whistling male song but got no apparent reaction. I then tried whistling female song and this male came in and also a female came in. The bird recorded was collected and "pulled" for anatomical studies by Mary Clench [Clenck?] and Peter Ames. It proved to be male. Quality: 1. Level: +3. 203 tape. Tape speed: 7.5. Low noise. Further notes re: Cut 13): The female responded vocally briefly (to whistled imitations); the male responded constantly, mainly to the imitation of female song. However both birds reacted by flying back and forth. The female soon ceased to react; he male continued to be so and was finally netted by this procedure. The male actively moved his alulas (photos made by Peter Ames) but I don't recall if the female did so or not but vaguely remember that she did not. Note 17/XII/72 - Heard a male of this species near the pass, but on south side (Soragua Valley side), on the road to Choroni. The altitude was therefore not less than 1300 m. 19/XII/72 - ~ 7:00 AM - By km 17 (= old 19+ and therefore same as Cuts 13 & 15) I heard a pair, male and female. @ ~ 9:00 AM heard a male @ km 15. The female tended to use to considerable extent a three-figure phrase.
