NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 69. Bulk reel: 384. Time: 5:30 AM to 6:15 AM. Talk (+/- semi-whines) presumably by a female, then ascending whistles by a male, who then displayed. The female remained, giving quiet "ao" calls. The male (apparently same one) then displayed back toward the female again, not landing in same spot, but then apparently flew to where the female was. Some "ao" calls, don't know by which, but suspect by the male. Meanwhile, loud "ao" calls are being given in a neighboring area, apparently in a territorial sense, and "the" local bird then flew with a flight scream. More notes re: Cut 69) - First sound heard from guans was a display @ 5:45 AM. Next display @ 5:50. After this displays by bird below road and one that alternated above and below road. Due to an apparent conflict, the birds moved on down the hill or to the east. I went to a new position down the road, = to the east, just @ km 23. The recording begins when I focused on a spot where I saw a male land after a display flight. During this recording can be heard loud "ao" calling, apparently with some "territorial" significance, by the birds that had moved down the hill. The bird that flew with a flight scream may have been the female, for shortly there was another display "directed" to where the scream bird had landed. That display was @ 6:05 AM and was the last heard today. It appears the birds are both beginning and ending their activity 10-15 [sic] earlier than when I first started working this spot ~ three weeks ago (8/III, but 28/II on upper road). Quality: 2+. Level: +3. 139 tape. Std.
