Observation details
Conspicuously darker than other peeps, but lacked any conspicuous rufous tones. Larger and darker than Least Sandpipers, same size as Semipalmated Sandpipers, smaller than Western Sandpipers which were all present for close comparison. Associated mostly with Semipalmated Sandpipers on mudflats. The stint was relatively short-legged and short, straight, and stout billed - more so than Semipalmated Sandpipers. Though the bird had two white "braces" on back, do not believe it to be a Little Stint. Unlike Little Stint: not as long legged, no white on chin, streaking but no spotting on breast, supercilium present but not split. In eBird photo database this bird looked very much like the August 30, 2016 bird by Stephan Lorenz in Pribilofs - including the very dark cap, cheek, breast, and back as well as the two white "braces" on its back. The zoom on my camera is dying, so we got much better looks (with Leica 60X scope) than photos would indicate. Prolonged, diagnostic looks as very slow-rising tide pushed birds into shore.
