Observation details
Seen sporadically over the previous week, but distance was too great to confidently identify it. Today we boated to within 50 meters to obtain these photos. The bird was extremely skittish and we eventually lost it when it dove and swam away from us. This bird has molted all of its flight feathers, so it will likely stick around. This is just the second record of this species from the Farallon Islands, with the one previous record occurring 20 years ago on 16 Dec 1997. Of the 101 previous California records, only 6 occurred in August.
