NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 5. Bulk reel: 321 a) 16/5/1966. Time: 1725. Note that this song (natural) is slightly different from that of Cut 4. Quality: 1-2. Level: +5. [No microphone mentioned by recordist; also he indicated that he used a parabola but did not specify make/model.] b) 18/5/66. 7:30 AM. This song may be by the same bird, but it isn't certain. Quality: 2. Level: +5. 31/7/68. In view of Cut 3), where birds were seen reasonably well, and also later recordings made at Cano La Urbana (R. Canos), see Cuts 6, 7, 8, 9, it seems clear that cuts 4 & 5 are of this species. However, it seems strange that Cut 1) (Nuria) & Cut 2) (Rio Grande) are very similar to each other and different from Cuts 3, 4, 5, also 6/9 [blank space here], in that at no place is any trill given,* whereas in these latter cuts every phrase ends with a trill (either fast, medium, or slow); although the first part of the phrase was very much like Cuts 1) & 2). I would normally be satisfied that the difference could be geographical "patois" except that both types are found in Rio Grande. This requires further investigation. *Although, note that when pair sings together, sometimes one bird trills while the other does not; at times both use a trill. This also should be checked into further but is probably only normal variation.
