Media notes
Part of the full "mega-brood" of Common Mergansers, regularly seen this year (and similarly last year) on this northern Ontario lake. Likely a result of multiple females collectively laying their eggs in a confined space like a hollow log or tree trunk, to be incubated by one female. The full triple-counted brood this time was 38, but I couldn't fit them all in the frame with my 300 mm lens!
Observation details
All juveniles of the "mega-brood" on Lake Boshkung (getting large, almost adult size, but juvenile striping still visible and hints of fine downy feathers in some birds). Counted twice by myself and once by my wife to verify number as 38!
