Observation details
The female Hairy WP that had been hanging around the past few days suddenly stopped feeding and clung motionless to the post of our feeder station for approx. 5 minutes. The other birds left while a pair of RT Hummingbirds continued to chase each other around the yard. As we commented about the frozen woodpecker and began to think there may be something wrong with it, a Cooper's Hawk swooped out of nowhere. After the hawk had passed the WP flitted to the other side of the post so as not to be seen by the hawk and stayed motionless for another 3-4 minutes. It reminded me of a rabbit freezing when it senses danger.
