Observation details
Honestly did not try to make a finer count, which isn't really realistic on a casual guided excursion here with tens of thousands of birds in the air, on the water, and covering the cliffs. Saw the full length of the colony by zodiac and it was occupied as the past several years. The Norwegian Polar Institute lists 60,000 breeding pairs at this colony, which as far as I know remains the best estimate of numbers at Alkefjellet (and about 850,000 breeding pairs in all of Svalbard, mostly concentrated in a few large colonies in the south and east).
