NOTES: (No. of Animals/Sex: Male(s), female(s). Response to playback: Normal song, increased tempo. Gen. Climate: Cyclic wet-dry. Gen. Habitat: Wooded grassland at lake edge.) all field annotations retained. See L.L. Short field notes (or Short & Horne in Birds of Africa). This sp. reacted to the playback of L. torquatus as did L. torquatus to that of rubrifacies. 9 Jan - While "playing" with Lykbius bidentatus and 3 picid species, heard a distant torquatus duet, only torquatus having been heard here. Later - 3 pm - I played back a rubrifacies duet. Instantly a torquatus overflew me to dead tree, there giving a long skizzing grating "GC alone. I pb again, it descends to me, over, and behind the tree. PB again, he overflies to dead tree. PB again, all rubrifacies, he comes right over and gives grating GC notes, tail t_ _ ing [word illegible in notes], bowing both times. He or she flies. As I get reado to play again, a rubrifacies duet to NW here in sympatry with L.t. I look, rubrifacies distant, not visible, but 2 torquatus near in dead tree cut into end of rubrifacies duet with extended grating GC, tails swinging, bowing aggressively. This cuts off the end of the L.r. duet. Jenny, bless her, has recorded all of this! As we play with L.t. pr. near camp, hear in PB response to L.t. and L.r. duets a couple of duets to far NW. 10 Jan - out 0615 - hear torquatus duet to W. 0650 to Ne of camp. 2 PBs of L.r. gets L. torquatus duet response to S, then L. rubrifacies trio response with duet [word obliterated on data sheet by 3-hole punch] that of torquatus. Both are responding to rubrifacies PB. Work closer to rubrifacies, as PB reaction pair duet, then 3 PBs needed for 2nd duet. They then duet close, 3 birds and to one side 2 birds. 0700 play torquatus and in response we get L.r. duet and almost simultaneous torquatus. 10 Jan Lake Birengero, 1300 m, S. Abagera Park. Duet! 0722 - duet of torquatus to W gets GC by L.r., then a duet by 2nd pair of L.r. just to W. PB out of sight 0725 - get 3-bird group response, 2 birds at one [side] of tree, one at other side of tree. All three call (there now are 5 here near lake and 2 upslope to W). Then one of 2 flies to third bird at other side and greets, its presumed mate comes from the other side to them, stands between 1st and 3rd bird, then 2 & 3 grating interaction (G.C.). 0730 torquatus PB - 2 rub. start duet, joined thereafter b y 3rd bird in GC after. 0735, no response to L.r. duet PB, no response to torquatus PB. then again L.r. PB duet - get GC, 2 of 3-bird group, then third comes in at end. NB - see tape - all 5 have called - Note - all this time tapping going on, presumed picid, but is 5th rubrifacies! Note cutting out of 3rd bird by one of pr, and splitting off of 2 birds most of time from the 5. 0745 break for vaillantii - 2 duets of rubrifacies at 8-8[number off page on data sheet]. 0835 - 2-bird group upslope duets. 0920 - GC - 3 birds as we work with vaillantii. 0937 - pair r. duets upslope to W. 0950 - Duet, no PB - much grating in this 3-bird group's duets though all call, maybe not all duet (1 grates only?). Lybius r. 3 + 2 near lake centered on tall dead Acacia poliocantha. This essentially ococupies a place of a torquatus pair, there being a pair to N & S with rubrifacies gap between + 1 pr L.r. on slope W. 1005 - duet of L. torquatus, camp pr. to S; 10:05.5 3 L.r. replky with duet there being no PB stimulation at all. 10:11 - L. torquatus in camp reply by duet to duet of nearby L.r.; 10:11.5 - L.r. G.C. response to torquatus duet, no PB here either. 10:15 - I PB L.t. duet near center of L.t. area - at 10:16 - pair L.r. to big dead A. poliocantha, pair on 1 side, 3rd on opposite side 5 m. away, duet response. 10:33 - 3-bird L.r. duet to [illegible] - before end of it torquatus instantly replies with duet to 3. 10:35 - to PB of Trachyphonus, one rubrifacies flies into poliocantha, comes in TRUE FLUTTER FLIGHT - FLOATING then hops-flies along branch, bowing, grating, and ta
