Observation details
Exact count of continuing birds seen on the wetland/pond on the south side of the dam/impoundment road of Lake 13. Fairly distant but still easily recognizable. This species occurs sporadically in Santa Fe county as a migrant in the spring, and seems to be scarcer further north and east, summering birds only appear to occur sporadically to Colfax and San Miguel counties, so these certainly are noteworthy. Slightly smaller and slimmer than the American Avocets also present. White underparts contrasting sharply with black upperparts, giving an almost "tuxedoed" appearance. Black face with prominent white eye arcs/spots. Thin black bill perhaps slightly longer than the length of the head and *straight* not upturned like that of an avocet. Long raspberry pink legs contrasting sharply with otherwise black-and-white color scheme. Heard giving diagnostic repeated "rik-rik-rik-rik-,,, etc) call, much different from the sharp whistled note of an avocet.
