Observation details
Dark morph. A large, staunch, barrel-chested jaeger. Obviously bulkier than the Arctic jaegers I've seen. Extensive pale flashing along primaries, especially on underside. Weak pale collar. Wings and tail broad. Lacked elongate central retrices. Watched as it chased down a little tern and then a short-tailed shearwater with apparent ease. Target bird would crash into water and jaeger dropped on top of them. Very powerful bird. Apologies for mediocre photos. I could see the bird quite clearly but it doesn't always translate into quality images. Estimate of 1.5km offshore when at its closest. Birds on shipping marker in background are brown boobies and pied cormorants.
