Media notes
Poor quality of the local Adult Cooper's Hawk perched in the Catalpa Tree (gimmick using the phone camera through binoculars).
Observation details
The local Adult individual was initially perched in the preferred surveillance tree. Once the Pigeon attempted foraging on the ground, the Hawk made an unsuccessful dive attempt on the group. The individual focused on one specific Pigeon, breaking chase after ~5 seconds. After all Pigeon evacuated the area, the Hawk took perch to the Catalpa tree and remained situated for at least 20 minutes and long after the observation's conclusion. During that time, they remained situated within the crown facing north with occasional feather preening. Beyond there, the individual stayed in the same tree for yet another 20 minutes, continuing to preen and survey the immediate area. Eventually the Adult shifted their position on the branch, facing south with a few wing stretches. All the while, the Pigeon refused to return and the House Sparrow protested from the yew bushes. Their total perch time was at least 40 minutes (both during and after the checklist). I'm uncertain which direction they took thereafter, but the hyperlocal area then quieted down to a few House Sparrow chirps and the steady calls of an Eastern Gray Squirrel. Finally having a longer look at this specific individual, the darker chocolate wing feathers are most evident - much deeper than any local Cooper's Hawks I've observed. Although the cheek features are slightly lighter, this local Hawk has a very distinct black crown, again a richer color than their counterparts. I was able to take a series of poor-quality photos of the individual using the gimmick of the phone's camera lens through my binoculars.
