Observation details
Observed foraging in a large elm tree above the bench I was setting in. Larger than Ladderback but not as big as Northern Flicker. No white feathers visible on the bird. Dorsally, the bird when in the sunlight appeared black with a greenish hue. The breast and belly appeared pinkish to red and is visible in the iPhone photographs. Did not hear the call. The bird flushed when a Sharp-shinned Hawk attacked some Eurasian Collared Doves in the adjacent tree, the underwing appeared somewhat lighter in color. A light colored neck collar is noted in one of the iPhone photographs. iPhone photographs attached.
