Observation details

Note that P10 is barely visible beyond the coverts and P9 is not fully-grown. Photos 5 and 6 show on the underwing blue lines that approximate the position of the dark subterminal area when P9 is fully grown. Also note the broad white trailing edge to the wing, the degree of contrast on the underwing between the coverts and the flight feathers, the leg color, and the pattern and extent of the winter markings on the head and neck. The bill has a distinctive pattern which is visible in photos of it in subsequent years.
