Observation details

At least one sitting inside dense macrocarpa tree. Gave itself away by giving 4 deep 'choaking' aark calls. Also quock. One immature bird (see photo: judging from this, it looks like a 2Y bird moulting into adult plumage) flushed at 16:08 by people passing on the other side of the river. Sat out briefly until they went, then returned to the same tree. Later, around 16:30, a bird in the same tree heard giving rapid, repeated, soft 'quok, quok, quok...' rather like a small dog yapping.
