Seven of the swans that were unable to fly over the dam due to the strong headwind. One was off to the left out of sight.
Observation details
Nothing on lake before I headed below the dam. 18 swans erratically struggled and were buffeted by the wind, some at times stalled, as they flew into a stiff headwind to dam and over. Eight were unable to make it over the top, landing on the leeward side. The others cleared the dam and landed in an open hole in the ice. The others then gradually walked up the grassy incline, flying away. After watching the swans on the east side of the dam, I noticed four resting on soybean stubble below the dam. Before I departed the lake, only 14 swans were present on the lake and none were on the soybean stubble.
