Observation details
Much smaller than the mallard pair that was the only other waterfowl in the waste water reservoir next to Hillside Blvd. Very small, relatively large, rounded head; short, wide and dark bill; grayish with lighter chest; and white, oval cheek patch. The chest coloration is much whiter than what references indicate it should be. Does this indicate it might be an immature male that is acquiring male plumage in the winter or does it represent a normal color variation a female?
