Virginia Rail in winter snow and ice at CVNP Beaver Marsh, Ohio
Observation details
Pics are for ID purposes only. eBird marked as rare for location and time of year. As has previously occurred before tonight, I heard it’s “kek-kek” before I spotted it. A markedly skittish, shy bird with quick, agile movements. When it turned to retreat back into the cattails its slim body made it very difficult to see in low light. It was literally there one second and gone in the other half of the same second! Way too quick for my limited camera skills. It’s always a real privilege to see such an unusual, beautiful bird. The Rail initially came out maneuvering its body in complete silence through the thickest clumps of cattail before briefly wading out into an opening of melted marsh water to forage for a moment. It then swiftly retreated back the same way it came out. The majority of the Beaver Marsh is still iced over today.
