Observation details
Continuing/returning immature found/reported by Peyton Bounds. See photos. The third and fourth photos show this bird with a Common Merganser for easy comparison. The Red-breasted is slightly smaller, with a thinner bill and smaller crown. Note the bill is more orange and less red. There is no distinct white throat patch on the RBME, but the upper part of the anterior neck is whiter than that of the COME. From behind, the back and rear of the head and neck are darker than in the COME. The base color of the head is a paler fawn color, as opposed to a darker chestnut in the COME.
