Observation details
I was scanning a group of mallards and I saw what I thought was a drake pintail in the group. I saw the brown head and white neck stripe and thought I had a drake pintail. I didn't look at the rest of the bird. I took some long distance photos through a fence and didn't think anymore about it. When I got home I looked at my pictures and it appears that the bird is a hybrid. I don't know what the other bird would be. The first thing that stood out for me was the yellow gold patch near the tail. It should be white on a pintail. The brown head and white neck stripe looked okay and it was gray underneath, maybe a little darker than it should be. The bill looked longer than it should be. It was blacker on top than it should be. It had a tan rump, it should be black. It had a very stubby black tail. It should be a lot longer than this unless it was broken but that doesn't appear to be the case. I don't know what I have here.
