Observation details
I'm going to leave it as Woodcock/Snipe until I get a more definite answer. Shocker!!!! Pulled up along the road to scan the pond for a moment before heading north to the dump. Along the close bank I see a large shorebird expecting it to be a snipe or LbDowitcher. Before leaving the car I put up the binocs and I see this bird probing with a funky sort of bobbing motion. Woodcock! I got off several pix - but through the reeds- and then slowly opened the door to get out my scope for a better look. The bird took off low, silently, towards the right far corner of the pond and out of sight. I’d bet it uses this pond every night for feeding. Note the heavy wide streaks on back and upper side. Brownish tint to breast.
