Observation details
First-cycle bird found by Tom Kerr on the U.S. side of the river this morning. Reports placed it near Goat Island, but our scans of the gulls in this area were unsuccessful. Snowfall intensified shortly after our arrival, reducing visibility drastically. However, to our absolute surprise, at around 3:25 PM Josh spotted the bird sitting on the breakwall close to shore on the Ontario side. We watched it for about five minutes and were able to obtain documentation before all gulls on the breakwall flushed. We were unable to relocate it after this point. In the field we noted a large gull with a uniform frosty gray plumage with wingtips that matched the mantle. Fairly large black bill, pink legs, and small dark eyes placed centrally on face giving a unique appearance. Very exciting re-find! Presumptive fifth provincial record, and first for Niagara County and the Niagara River.
