Observation details
Continuing individual, arrived "on time" at 17:36 to sit on marker 1 post (as it also did the last two days). Made several sallies over the next 4 minutes, returning to the post in between ventures. Large-headed nightjar with long tail. No conspicuous white corners on the tail as in Eastern Whip-poor-will. Crown appeared dark (no median crown stripe), though real dark conditions. Overall size and tail length when seen in flight appeared consistent with Chuck rather than a Whip. Very unexpected given the time of year. Second or third winter record for Galveston County/High Island. Perhaps the same individual that over-wintered in Smith Oaks last January-March
