Observation details

2 distant birds, apparently both 1st cy females, in the northern bay. Digiscoped but doubtfully identifiable from the images! Small and compact diving duck similar in size to Goldeneye which it was consorting with but flatter backed and smaller headed – lacking that species’ fuller nape & instead having a smoothly rounded head & an even smaller (less deep-based) bill. Seen at huge range so no detailed plumage features visible but extensively pale on it’s head (except for a dark cap and large dark cheek patch). Otherwise predominantly brown above & white below with a rather broad, dingy brown breast band. Frequently rolled on its sides flashing extensive white flanks.
