Observation details
Amazing find by Kevin McKereghan and Tera Freedman. Spotted by Ed but then quickly retreated into the grass prompting many observers to search for an hour or more. Eventually refound foraging on the mudflat in mixed flock by Ethan! 🙏🏻 Flew enticingly close to CC County line once.** Medium sandpiper with dark back, white belly with dark chevrons, medium somewhat drooped bill. Rather like a plump dark shorter-billed Dunlin x Surfbird. Did not see white in wings in flight but lighting was difficult. Hopefully someone got photos. It did seem odd to find it feeding on mudflat. ** Additional notes: The bird flew and landed briefly on the mud north of the creek: 37.896996,-122.312655. We reviewed the coordinates with Ethan on site and noted that the coordinates fell short (~ 15 feet?) of the county line per the CC County Assessor map.
