Observation details
First-year. On the darkish side, but I believe it is within the range of the Kumlien's subspecies. Photos of the gull on the water and on the ice. The bird had a dark body and relatively dark upperparts and folded primaries fringed in white, yet was concolorous overall (upperparts, tertials, and primaries all roughly the same shade of brown), lacking the slightly darker tertials and primary tips shown by "Thayer's" Gulls. The bird was in view for an hour or more before being flushed by a Bald Eagle.
