Observation details
The local guides constructed a hide of banana leaves as the presence of a forest rail had been detected in the last couple of days. We sat in the hide which was build into a slope made slippery by vegetation and soft soil. We could hear its repeated, mechanical, almost growling "kaWAH" call. We waited for quite a while as the calls came closer to the call we were using, placed in an open area in this otherwise thickly vegetated slope. . It was spotted by a few in the group as it creeped in out of the tangles. You had to look at the entire edge and look for movement and then get your binocs on and finally I got glimpses of it as it moved in and out of the shadows. My best look was as it looked back at us right before it hopped over a mossy trunk and out of view--or maybe in view as it blended in so well with the surroundings. I was able to sketch this moment with pen in my little sketchbook.
