Photo shows imprint in snow where a COHA pinned a MODO down. Note blood, feathers, feces, and hawk’s wing imprints.
Observation details
Made an early morning swoop at the birds. 0753 hrs. I’m not sure if it grabbed a MODO or not. About 20 of them were on the ground under the feeder at the time of the attack. I don’t see a cloud of feathers as you usually do upon a successful hit. All the birds scattered and didn’t come back for a while. At 0950 hrs., the COHA grabbed a MODO on the ground near the feeder and had it pinned on the ground. I stealthily reached for my camera and it was gone before ai could age and sex it. I did go out and photographed the bloody scene. There were feathers, blood, feces, and the imprint of the hawk’s wings in the snow.
