Observation details
Flew right over us before landing on pictured branch--was so large in flight both of us at first thought "owl!" and "eagle!"--though were quick to adjust to "hawk!". Hard to see in picture but there is distinct banding on the tail, so we ruled out red-tailed hawk. Personally think cold was contributing to apparent size (fluffy). Weren't sure based solely on appearance between red-shouldered or broad-shouldered, but based on likelihood for Chicago for December, we're calling this an immature red-shouldered hawk
