Observation details
On dead snags on north side of Ave C, just west of Yellow Box Willows; plucking and eating a small passerine that was almost certainly a Horned Lark (very long hind claw visible). The Merlin was probably richardsoni, as it was quite pale below with reddish streaking, and had a muted face pattern (with almost no malar stripe); upperparts perhaps not as pale as expected for richardsoni, but pale fringing suggested it was a juvenile (averaging a bit darker than adults)
