Observation details
(Rare): “infrequent”: seen well (with a dozen birders) in tight close goose flock north side of Desoris Pond ~ (40.8973,-73.6252), bean goose, Ross’s and Snow geese all together packed in with hundreds of Canada. Bean goose photoed , and recorded calls. Calling a lot when first arrived!! Have never heard a bean goose vocalizing like this before. — — Cont. rarity since early November, ca. 2nd NY state record and first for Long Island. — — First time seen at this spot. Reported here 8:41a this morning. We stood on muddy shore of pond at (40.8978,-73.6239) to view close geese floating on water. — — Bean goose prev. has been at the Nassau Country Club golf course ponds to south of here lately (incl. yesterday with the Ross’s Goose), and Beaver Lake and Planting Fields Arboretum to southeast of here before that. (Both those spots frozen over this morning earlier, no geese at all at the golf course, and 1500+ Canada only at the frozen Beaver Lake and almost entirely frozen creek meadow to north of it.) This pond today where it is is all open water, prob ocean salt water influence. — — New York state bird for Courtney, first seen in years since the several we saw in Oregon.
