Observation details
First spotted by local resident Fabius Galanin, who texted Sulli about seeing an eagle over Tolstoy Point. Sulli somehow miraculously spotted it from inside A Dorm, and we all headed out to track it down/identify it. We saw it first continuing over Tolstoy Point, then watched it head inland and circle over Telegraph Hill, then the bird flew to Pumphouse Lake, and ended up flying along the updrafts alongside Kaminista Quarry before eventually perching near the entrance to it. We watched it for a bit before it eventually took off and flew towards the airport, eventually losing it as it floated further and further away. Photos reveal a young bird in messy molt, but with what appear to be 6 emarginated primaries, extensive white on its underside, and dark “boots”. Our first confirmed eagle on the island in a couple of months.
