Kea V-2321 name Paul greeted us and then wanted to hop in our van.
Observation details
We were greeted at Arthur Pass by a Kea that wanted to hop into our van after we exited. As we were enjoying watching him, a second Kea joined us from across the road. Having gotten wet in the on-and-off light rain, both birds were busy preening, with Paul giving us a great look at this bright red feathers. We watched the Keas for half hour, lucky to see the world's only montane parrot! Upon returning home, band numbers were research. The first Kea with a silver metal band numbered V-2321 is named Paul. He was originally banded as an adult nine years ago. The second Kea had a green and white band on each leg and a silver band numbered V-0376; this bird is named Ya se (which means Arthur in Chinese).
