Media notes

The first merlin calls after noticing the second merlin. The call increases of urgency before this falcon flies toward the second merlin.

Observation details

One of the two was on the top of the tallest dead tree by the riverbend, foraging. It was there for a while, and I passed by it on my way back. Suddenly, I heard a call of increasing urgency behind me (recordings) and saw this merlin swooping to a tall evergreen in front of me. Another merlin emerged from this tree and the two of them had a brief frontal interaction in flight, followed by short burst of what looked like a chase. One of the merlins flew away and the other stood its ground fora little while (pics) before also flying away. They were about the same size, so maybe of the same gender. I upload both recordings (in consecutive order as they were made) even if the second one is better, to reproduce the "crescendo" of the falcon's call.
