Observation details
The Downy Woodpecker was not initially observed at the feeder but may have been watching from the nearby tree. When I went out to fill the empty seed feeder, the (approximately 25) sparrows flew off to nearby bushes. When I reached up to hang the seed feeder, the Woodpecker was on the suet cage about 1 foot from me. It saw me but did not leave the suet (and kept eating) as I quietly took half a dozen photos. As I moved slowly away, it flew to the tree above me, watched for a few seconds, and then flew away. These photos are all of the same individual (male Downy Woodpecker), taken from about 12 inches away.
